A classification of the hair loss pattern in men has been developed by a dermatologist and surgeon of hair transplant, named Dr. O’Tar Norwood in 1975. Norwood developed this wide classification of hair loss in men by building upon on the work done by Hamilton, before him. There are seven classes of Norwood hair loss pattern described by the dermatologist but Norwood class 5 hair loss pattern is the most prevalent one among them.

Norwood class 5 hair loss pattern has mainly three varieties of hair loss prototype. Norwood hair loss pattern has class 5 pattern, the class 5A pattern which mainly refers to hair loss from the anterior or middle area of the scalp and the class 5V pattern, which is a type of hair loss mainly found in the vertex and bottom region of the scalp. The hair loss pattern experienced by men in this class 5 pattern is reaching a considerable level nowadys. In this particular class of hair loss, mostly the hair starts disappearing from the top of the vertex and also from the crown.

A detailed description about the Norwood class 5 hair loss pattern suggests that there is an advanced enlargement of the frontal and temporal areas of the scalp. This type of hair loss pattern is experienced by men when the band that separates the two areas becomes slender and barren in nature. In the 5A prototype of Norwood hair loss pattern, the loss of hair mainly extends towards the region of vertex on the scalp of men. Even the part that lies at the back of the scalp has an area that can be called to be bald, which is narrower in character than can be seen in the normal Norwood 4 pattern.

Men who experience Norwood class 5 hair loss pattern can easily go for hair transplantation and hair grafts. A private consultation with the patient and also the coarseness and texture of the hair would help the doctor to suggest about the number of grafts that a particular patient of hair loss would require.
